Scituate, Rhode Island is built around the Scituate Reservoir, the largest reservoir in the state, run by Providence Water and the drinking-water supply for more than 60 percent of Rhode Islanders. Most of the town lies in the reservoir’s drainage basin, and US 6 crosses the water on its business and bypass routes. The villages, North Scituate, Hope, Clayville and Smithville among them, sit around it.

To protect the water supply, RIDOT has used a 60:40 mix of calcium chloride and sodium chloride with sand on state roads in the basin since 1990, in place of plain salt and sand. Calcium chloride holds moisture, so the film stays damp on lower panels and wheels, and the sand adds grit.
Brine before storms
RIDOT sprays salt brine on its roads up to three days before a storm. It dries into a salt layer that tyres throw on to the car before any snow arrives.
US 6, Route 101 and Route 116
US 6 runs through town and across the reservoir, Route 101, the old Hartford Pike, ends at US 6 here, and Route 116 crosses the town. Most Scituate driving is on long, open stretches of them.
