Glocester is the northwest Rhode Island town of Chepachet and Harmony, with Putnam Pike, US Route 44, running west through the town centre to Putnam, Connecticut. It is forest and reservoir country: the George Washington Management Area, more than 4,000 acres of protected forest, sits on Route 44 near Chepachet, Waterman Reservoir is in town, and part of Glocester drains to the Scituate Reservoir, the drinking-water supply for more than 60 percent of Rhode Island.

What the local conditions do to a car

Calcium chloride in the reservoir basin
On state roads in the Scituate Reservoir drainage basin, RIDOT has used a 60:40 calcium chloride and sodium chloride mix with sand since 1990 instead of plain salt. Calcium chloride holds moisture, so the film stays damp on lower panels, and the sand adds grit.
Putnam Pike and Route 100
Route 44 carries most of Glocester’s traffic, with Route 100 heading north from Chepachet into Burrillville and Route 94 ending at 44 in the village. RIDOT pre-treats with salt brine up to three days before a storm, and it all ends up on the car.
State forest country
With thousands of acres of protected forest in town, a lot of Glocester cars are parked under trees: sap, droppings, leaf stains and, from late May into June, a coat of pine pollen.
Autumn leaves
In a forested town, wet autumn leaves land on parked cars and collect in the cowl below the windshield. Left to sit, they stain paint and hold moisture against it.
