The north and south branches of the Pawtuxet River run through it, and the old mills that the river once powered, the Lippitt Mill and the Royal Mill at River Point among them, still stand along the banks. The river is not always gentle: in the 2010 floods it reached 21 feet, 12 feet above flood stage.

I-95 runs just past the town line, and most trips toward Providence or the coast start on it. Highway miles add brake dust to the wheels, road film to the lower body and stone chips to the front.

Inland snow and brine
