Smithfield is a suburban town of old mill villages, Greenville, Esmond, Georgiaville, Stillwater, Spragueville and Mountaindale, along the Woonasquatucket River. Bryant University has its campus here, Fidelity Investments is the largest employer, and I-295, Route 7 (Douglas Pike) and Route 116 carry most of the traffic.

I-295 and Route 116
I-295 has a cloverleaf interchange as it enters town, and commuting on it, Route 7 and Route 116 means highway miles: brake dust on wheels, road film on the lower body and stone chips on the front.
Inland snow
Rhode Island’s snowfall rises away from the bay, from 25 to 30 inches a year around greater Providence to 40 to 55 in the western third of the state. Smithfield is on the inland side of that climb, and RIDOT brines state roads before each storm.
Sap, droppings and leaves
A car parked under trees collects sap, bird droppings and wet fall leaves. Each one can etch the clear coat if it is left to sit.
Pollen season
From late May until about mid-June, yellow pine pollen covers every car outside and bakes on in the sun.
