Portsmouth is the north end of Aquidneck Island, with water on three sides. I come to your driveway anywhere on the island side of town.

Portsmouth shares Aquidneck Island with Middletown and Newport, and also takes in Prudence, Patience, Hope and Hog islands out in the bay. More of the town is water than land. The Mount Hope Bridge ties it to Bristol, and the Sakonnet River Bridge to Tiverton, so almost every trip off the island crosses salt water.

I have coated and detailed cars for 15 years and more than 1,200 vehicles. On an island like this, the question is less whether a car needs protection and more which parts of it need it most.

What the local conditions do to a car

Salt air from both sides
Narragansett Bay is to the west and the Sakonnet River to the east, and the island is narrow. Salt air settles on cars all over town, not just on the shore roads, and holds moisture against paint and trim.
Bridges and highways
Route 114 crosses the Mount Hope Bridge; Route 24 and Route 138 cross the Sakonnet River Bridge. RIDOT pre-treats with salt brine before storms and salts through them, and that film ends up on lower panels and wheels.
Wind across the island
Open water on both sides means wind carries spray and grit onto parked cars. Glass takes it as a haze you notice most in low sun.
Pollen season
From late May until about mid-June, yellow pine pollen covers every car left outside. Mixed with dew and salt, it dries into a film that does not rinse off on its own.
What I’d recommend

What fits a car in Portsmouth

Ceramic coating (Express, Essential, Enhanced). For a car that lives between two bodies of salt water, a coating is the protection worth paying for. Salt, pollen and road film sit on the coating instead of the clear coat, and wash off more easily.

All-Glass Ceramic Coating (coating add-on). Coated windows shed salt haze and rain, which is what you want on the bridges in a crosswind.

Wheel Face Coating (coating add-on). Brake dust and winter brine both cling to wheels. Coated wheel faces let them rinse off.

Annual Coating Care. A yearly wash, decontamination and top-up that keeps a coating near the water behaving like new.

How booking works in Portsmouth

Portsmouth is about 30 miles from Wareham, well inside the 40-mile radius my booking system works to. The assistant confirms your exact address when you book.

I’m mobile: I come to you and the work happens in your driveway. I arrive at one of three times: 9:00 in the morning, 12:30, or 3:00 in the afternoon. A coating takes most of the day, so it gets the morning arrival; a detail can take any time it fits.

Portsmouth is within the distance my booking system covers, and the Mount Hope and Sakonnet bridges are the routes in. A coating takes the 9:00 arrival and the whole day.

The system also checks drive time to your exact address. If online booking shows no open times for your date, call or text and I will tell you whether it works.

Rain on the day
A coating needs a dry day to cure. If rain is forecast I’ll call or text and we pick a new day at no charge; for detailing, light drizzle is usually fine.

Common questions

Portsmouth FAQ

Yes. Portsmouth is on my service roster and I work in your driveway. If online booking shows no times for your address, call or text and I will tell you straight away what is possible.
It helps the paint and wheels shed brine and road salt, so less of it stays on the car between washes. It does not coat the underside, which still needs a regular rinse while the roads are treated.
It gives the salt a slick, bonded surface to sit on instead of the paint, so a rinse removes it before it can do harm. It is protection, not a force field: the car still needs washing.
On an island with wind off the water from both sides, it is worth considering. All-Glass Ceramic Coating is an add-on to any of the three coatings and covers every window.
