Along Ocean Drive, Brenton Point and the Cliff Walk, spray and salt air come straight off the Atlantic. Downtown, the harbour does the same on a smaller scale. Salt settles on paint, glass and trim and holds moisture against them.
Old streets, tight parking
The historic district has one of the highest concentrations of colonial houses in the country, on streets laid out long before cars. Tight curbside parking means door dings, scuffs and swirl marks from quick washes.
Summer traffic
The mansions, beaches and Fort Adams festivals bring heavy summer traffic. Stop-and-go miles add brake dust to wheels and road film to the lower body.
Brine on Route 138 and the bridge
RIDOT pre-treats state roads with salt brine before storms and salts through them. The bridge approach and Route 138 put that film on lower panels all winter.
