Jamestown is almost all Conanicut Island, the second largest island in Narragansett Bay. Nearly three quarters of the town’s area is water. Route 138 is the only state highway, crossing the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge to the mainland on one side and the Newport Bridge to Aquidneck on the other.

Salt air on all sides
No house in Jamestown is far from the bay. Salt air reaches every driveway on the island, settles on paint and glass, and holds moisture against trim and seams.
Beavertail and the south end
At Beavertail and Fort Wetherill the island meets open water. On a windy day spray and salt carry well inland onto parked cars.
Two bridges, one highway
Every trip off the island is on Route 138 over one of the two bridges. RIDOT brines and salts it in winter, and that film coats lower panels and wheels.
Farm roads
Working farmland is still part of the island, Watson Farm among it. Farm-road dust and mud on lower panels scratch the paint if they are wiped off dry.

What fits a car in Jamestown
