North Smithfield is mill villages and open country on the Massachusetts line: Slatersville, America’s first planned industrial mill village, begun by Samuel and John Slater in 1803, plus Forestdale, Union Village, Primrose, Branch Village and Park Square. Woonsocket Hill, at 586 feet, is one of the highest points in the state, and Route 146 runs through as the North Smithfield Expressway on its way to Worcester.

What the local conditions do to a car

Higher ground, more snow
Snowfall in Rhode Island climbs away from the bay, to 40 to 55 inches a year in the western third of the state. With some of the highest ground in Rhode Island, North Smithfield sees its share, and RIDOT brines state roads before each storm.
Route 146 commuting
Route 146 carries traffic south to Providence and north into Massachusetts toward Worcester. Daily highway miles mean brake dust, road film and stone chips on the front of the car.
Back roads and trees
The town mixes rural roads with suburban streets. Back-road dust and mud, and sap and leaves from overhanging trees, end up on paint that has to be washed carefully.
Pollen season
From late May until about mid-June, yellow pine pollen covers every car outside and dries into a film in the sun.
