Salt water on every side
The peninsula is narrow, with Massachusetts Bay to the north and east and Hingham Bay to the west. Salt spray reaches every street, settles on paint, trim and glass, and holds moisture there.
Nantasket Beach
Nantasket Beach is one of the best-known beaches around Boston, with fine, light gray sand. That sand gets everywhere: carpets, seat rails, door seals and the paint, if it is wiped off dry.
Storm exposure
With open water on both sides, wind-driven spray in a winter storm coats cars far more heavily than it does inland. Parts of Spinnaker Island sat so low that fill was brought in to keep the water out.
Route 228 in winter
Route 228 runs from Route 3 in Rockland through Hingham and ends in Hull. Salted all winter, it leaves a film on lower panels and wheels that the sea air then keeps damp.

What fits a car in Hull
