Carver is famous locally for the number of cranberry bogs in it. Its farmers grew a fifth of all the cranberries in the United States by 1900, by the 1940s the town’s harvest was the largest in the world, and the bogs are still a major business. The rest of the town is pine and cedar: a large cedar swamp in the middle and a share of Myles Standish State Forest in the southeast corner.

It is one of the closest towns to me, just over the Wareham line. I have coated and detailed cars for 15 years and more than 1,200 vehicles, and Carver cars have a very particular set of problems: pine, sand and bog-country roads.

What the local conditions do to a car

Pine pollen and pitch
With pines everywhere and the state forest in town, late May into June brings a heavy yellow coat of pine pollen on every parked car. Pitch pine sap is the year-round companion, and it hardens fast in summer heat.
Bog country
Cranberry growers haul in sand and spread it on their bogs every few years, and farm trucks run the bog roads through harvest. On Carver’s back roads that grit and mud ends up on the lower half of the car.
Route 44 and Route 58
US 44 crosses the north of town and Route 58 runs down to the Wareham line. Winter brine and salt off them dry into a film on rocker panels and wheels.
Sandy ground
Carver sits on the sandy soils of the pine barrens, and sand gets tracked in on every shoe. It works into carpet fibres and seat rails and acts like sandpaper underfoot.

What fits a car in Carver

Ceramic coating (Express, Essential, Enhanced). Pine pollen and sap bake on in the sun and can mark the clear coat. A coating keeps them on a slick layer instead, so they rinse off.

Enhanced Ceramic Coating (7-year, two-stage correction first). If sap has already left marks in the clear coat, the two-stage correction in the Enhanced coating takes them out before the coating goes on.

Deep Carpet Extraction. Sand works below the reach of a vacuum. Hot-water extraction brings it up out of the carpet and upholstery.
