Much of Halifax’s geography is water. East and West Monponsett Ponds sit in the middle of town, split by a strip of land barely 150 feet wide in places that carries Route 58 between them. Silver Lake runs along the eastern edge, Robbins Pond and Burrage Pond are out west, and Great Cedar Swamp and Peterson Swamp lie on either side of the Monponsett ponds. Small seaplanes even land on East Monponsett.

Routes 58 and 106 in winter
Routes 58 and 106 are the two main roads through town and meet just east of the centre, with Route 36 ending at 106 nearby. Most Halifax driving is on them, and a winter of brine and salt spray ends up on lower panels, wheels and the tailgate.
Lake-edge damp
Cars parked near the Monponsett ponds or Silver Lake sit in moist air off the water. Dew stays on paint longer, and anything on the surface, pollen, dust, bird droppings, stays wet and active longer too.
Swamp cedar, pine and pollen
Between the cedar swamps and the woods, Halifax has plenty of trees over driveways. Pine pollen peaks late May into June, and sap and droppings come with parking underneath.
Summer on the water
A town built around ponds spends its summers at them. Wet gear, sand and sunscreen work into seats and carpets, and a dark interior parked by the water takes the full sun.

What fits a car in Halifax
