Pembroke splits neatly in two. The northern half is rivers and thick forest, the woods that once supplied timber to the North River shipyards. The southern half is ponds: Oldham, Furnace, Great and Little Sandy Bottom, Stetson, and Silver Lake where Pembroke meets Kingston, Plympton and Halifax. Those ponds still irrigate the town’s cranberry bogs.

The town is rural in character with pockets of neighbourhood, and the car problems follow the map: trees and pollen everywhere, pond-season interiors in the south, and winter road film on the state routes. What the local conditions do to a car

Five state routes and Route 3
Routes 14, 27, 36, 53 and 139 all run through Pembroke, and Route 3 crosses the northeast corner with an exit at Route 139. Winter brine and salt off them leave a film on lower panels, wheels and the back of the car.
North Pembroke woods
Houses set into forest mean sap, droppings and leaf litter on the car, and the pine pollen that coats New England from late May into June.
Pond living
Around Oldham, Furnace and Silver Lake, cars sit by the water. Damp air keeps dew on the paint longer, and anything on the surface stays wet and working on it.
Summer at the water
Days at the ponds bring sand, wet gear and sunscreen into the car. By the end of summer it is down in the carpet fibres.
