Hanover is bounded on two sides by water: the North and Indian Head rivers along the south and southeast, and the Third Herring Brook along the east. Inside those lines it is mostly flat woodland, with Factory Pond, Forge Pond and Hacketts Pond and the swamps and bogs of South Hanover. A short run of Route 3 crosses the northeast corner, and Routes 53, 123 and 139 carry the rest of the traffic.

What the local conditions do to a car

Route 3 and Route 53 brine
The Route 3 exit at Route 53 is in Hanover, and Routes 53 and 139 share the road for a mile in the southeast corner. Winter commuting on them leaves a film of brine and salt on lower panels, wheels and the back of the car.
Woodland lots
West Hanover is mostly flat woodland. Parking under trees means sap, bird droppings and, from late May into June, the yellow pine pollen that coats everything in New England. All of it is acidic enough to mark paint if it bakes on.
Rivers, ponds and wet ground
Between the North River marshes, the ponds and the swamps in South Hanover, a lot of town sits low and damp. Cars parked near water and wetland stay wet longer after rain and dew, which gives dirt and pollen time to stick.
Commuter wear on the lights
Daily highway miles and years of sun are what turn headlight lenses yellow and hazy, and a hazy lens throws less light on a dark stretch of Route 123.

What fits a car in Hanover
