More than a quarter of Mattapoisett’s area is water. The Mattapoisett River runs down from Rochester into Mattapoisett Harbor, the centre of town around the harbour is known simply as the Village, and the shoreline has four beaches, two waterfront parks, Ned Point Light and the Nasketucket Bay State Reservation out toward Fairhaven. North of I-195 the town turns rural, out through Tinkhamtown and the Haskell Swamp.

From the Village to Ned Point and the Nasketucket shore, salt air settles on cars every day. It holds moisture against paint, trim and glass and works into seams and around badges long before you see any damage.
Route 6 and I-195 in winter
US Route 6 is the town’s main road and I-195 crosses the north of town, with its own Mattapoisett exit. Both are brined and salted all winter, and lower panels and wheels take the worst of it.
Four beaches
Summer means sand in the carpets, wet towels on the seats and a car parked in full sun by the water for hours at a time. The interior takes as much wear as the paint.
Up-country pollen and sap
North of the highway, in Tinkhamtown and around Haskell Swamp, cars live under trees. Pine pollen peaks late May into June, and sap and droppings fall year round.
