Rochester is the quiet inland neighbour between Wareham, Marion and Mattapoisett and the Lakeville line. The town is mostly rural-residential with working farms, protected by its own Right-to-Farm bylaw, and the Mattapoisett and Sippican rivers both start their run to Buzzards Bay here. Snipatuit Pond, Long Pond, Mary’s Pond and the Quittacas ponds on the Lakeville border fill in the rest of the map.

It is also one of the closest towns to me. I have coated and detailed cars for 15 years and more than 1,200 vehicles, and getting to Rochester is never the hard part of the day.

What the local conditions do to a car

Farm roads and field dust
Living next to working farmland means dust in dry spells and mud in wet ones, and both end up on lower panels, in wheel wells and on the floor mats. Dust left on paint gets ground in by the next wipe with a dry cloth.
Routes 58, 105 and the interstates
Route 105 runs through the town centre, Route 58 ends at Route 28 on the town line, and I-495 and I-195 are minutes away. Winter brine from all of them dries into a film on the lower half of the car.
Pine pollen and sap
From late May into June, pine pollen turns every parked car yellow. In a town with this much woodland and swamp, including the Haskell Swamp Wildlife Management Area, a car parked outside gets the full dose, plus sap from the trees above it.
Pond season
Snipatuit Pond and Mary’s Pond are where a lot of summer happens. Wet swimsuits, towels and sandy feet in the car add up to damp carpet by August.
