Acushnet lies along the Acushnet River, a few miles north of Buzzards Bay, with New Bedford across the river and Fairhaven to the south. It has almost no state highway of its own: just a short stretch of Route 105 in the northeast corner, with I-195 passing below it through Fairhaven. Most of the town is low coastal plain, below eighty feet.

The Acushnet River, the Keene River, the New Bedford Reservoir, Hamlin’s Mill Pond, East Pond and Tinkham Pond all sit in town. Near the water, dew sits on paint in the morning, and moisture is what lets pollen and dirt bond.
Salt air from the bay
The town is about four miles north of Buzzards Bay, and the south end borders Fairhaven and the harbour. On a windy day, salt air off the bay reaches this far inland.
Pollen season
Late May into June, pine pollen coats every parked car in New England. On a dewy morning it turns to a paste that bakes on in the sun.
Winter roads
The nearest highway is I-195 just south through Fairhaven, with Route 18 and Route 140 over in New Bedford. Every route out of town is salted through the winter, and the film ends up on lower panels and wheels.
