Rockland is about ten square miles, rocky ground as the name says, with Route 3 clipping the northeast corner and Routes 123 and 139 crossing just south of the centre. The former Naval Air Station sits on the north side. It is a residential town with ponds and brooks through it, and the cars here mostly deal with winter roads and trees.

What the local conditions do to a car

Route 3 and Route 228
A short stretch of Route 3 crosses the northeast corner of town, with Route 228 starting just south of it. MassDOT pre-treats with brine and salts Route 3 through every storm, and commuter traffic throws the spray onto every car nearby.
Ponds and brooks
Accord Pond on the Hingham and Norwell line, Studleys Pond south of the centre and the Abington-Rockland Reservoir all sit in or along town. Houses near the water see more morning damp, which lets pollen and dirt stick to paint.
Pollen season
Late May into June, pine pollen coats every parked car in New England, and it bakes on in the sun if left.
Leaf fall
A town forest and tree-lined streets mean wet leaves on the paint in the fall. Left to sit, they stain lighter colours.
