More than a third of Duxbury’s area is water. Cape Cod Bay is on the east, Duxbury Bay and Kingston Bay on the southeast, and Duxbury Beach, a six-mile barrier beach, is joined to the town by the Powder Point Bridge, the only road out to it. Inland it is ponds and bogs: Duxbury is the sixth largest cranberry producer in Massachusetts, and the bay has oyster beds.

Along Duxbury Bay, Snug Harbor and the shore roads, salt air settles on paint, glass and trim every day, holding moisture against the finish and working into seams and around badges.
Over-sand driving
The town issues beach vehicle permits for Duxbury Beach. A truck that has been out on the sand comes back with salt spray, wet sand and salt water on the underside, in the wheel wells and on the lower panels.
Route 3 and the state routes
Route 3 runs through town with two Duxbury exits, and Routes 3A, 14 and 139 carry the rest. A winter of brine and salt dries into a film on the lower half of the car.
Bog and pond country
Inland, the ponds, bogs and wooded sanctuaries mean trees over driveways: sap, droppings and the yellow pine pollen that peaks from late May into June.
