Brookline is almost surrounded by Boston. North of Route 9 it is dense and urban, with Coolidge Corner and the Green Line; south of it are larger lots, old estates and winding, tree-lined lanes. The Muddy River runs along its edge through Olmsted Park and the Riverway.

What the local conditions do to a car

City parking
Brookline does not allow parking on any street for more than an hour between 2 and 6 a.m., so most cars here live in driveways, garages or rented spaces in town lots. Open lots mean sun and whatever falls from above; garages mean dust and tight quarters.
Route 9 and city traffic
Route 9 runs through the middle of town as Boylston Street. Stop-and-go city driving means brake dust on the wheels and road film on the lower panels, and in winter, salt and brine on top.
Tree-lined streets
South Brookline’s lanes are thick with trees and shrubs. Oak pollen in spring, pine pollen into June, sap, and wet leaves in the fall all land on cars that park beneath them.
Winter brine
Massachusetts roads are pre-treated with brine before storms and salted through them, and the commute into Boston on any state road brings it home on the car.

What fits a car in Brookline
