Mercedes runs some of the hardest factory clear coats in the world — many built on an engineered nano-silica layer. That makes coating exceptional, and correction a job for someone who knows the paint.

Ceramiclear-type nano-silica top layer
The factory’s own nano-silica skin is thin and engineered — preserve it, don’t grind it.

Mercedes-Benz clear coat rates among the hardest in the industry — often 3H to 5H on the pencil scale. Many Mercedes finishes use a Ceramiclear-type system, where engineered nano-particles of silica migrate to the very top of the clear coat as it cures, forming a thin, hard, scratch-resistant skin.
That skin is brilliant — and it’s why correction has to be done carefully. Grind through that top fraction of a mil and the paint beneath behaves completely differently. The right approach is light, expert correction followed by a coating that protects the factory’s own engineering.

Why it matters
Why coat your Mercedes-Benz
Among the best substrates there is
A coating bonds best to a hard, dense, uniform surface — and Mercedes clear coat is about as hard as factory paint gets. The bond and the hydrophobic life are exceptional on this paint.
Protect the nano layer, don’t remove it
Mercedes’ Ceramiclear-style finishes carry a thin, engineered silica skin at the very top. We correct conservatively and let an Owner’s Pride coating add the sacrificial layer — so future swirls hit the coating, not that factory skin.
Obsidian and the dark finishes
Obsidian Black and the deep metallics show every defect and, once corrected, give back a depth that looks lit from within. The coating keeps that finish flawless instead of re-swirling within weeks.
Hard paint, so correct it once
A swirled Mercedes almost always needs multi-stage correction — the same hardness that resisted the swirls resists the polish removing them. Coating afterward means you never repeat that 8-to-12-hour job.
Ceramiclear: the layer most shops grind away
On many Mercedes finishes, the top ~0.2 mil of clear coat is a hardened nano-silica layer — engineered, scratch-resistant, and not replaceable once it’s polished off. Aggressive correction removes it and leaves softer paint behind. Our process respects that layer: measured correction, then an Owner’s Pride coating that takes over the job of protecting the surface.
“Mercedes paint is the hardest I work on, and that’s a good thing — but you have to respect that top nano layer. I correct only what I need to, then coat it. That’s how an Obsidian Black stays a mirror instead of a swirl trap.”

The coating
Installed by an Owner’s Pride pro
Silicon-carbide flagship chemistry, self-healing topcoats, and the only major coating warranty with no annual-inspection bill.
Owner’s Pride is a family-run American coating company — two generations and more than two decades at the front edge of surface-protection chemistry. Chris is a trained, certified Owner’s Pride installer, which means every coating is registered under Owner’s Pride’s nationwide written warranty.
SiC — not just SiO₂
Owner’s Pride leads with Silicon Carbide (SiC) chemistry in its flagship line. SiC is harder and more heat-stable than the silica (SiO₂) most coatings rely on — denser protection and a deeper, wetter gloss.
Heat-activated self-healing
The OP X and SELECT topcoats are engineered so light wash swirls and marring soften away with heat — sun, warm water, engine bay. The finish keeps looking corrected far longer.
A warranty without the catch
Coverage runs 3, 5, 7, or 9 years as a written Owner’s Pride product warranty registered to your car — with no mandatory paid annual inspection to keep it valid. Most ‘lifetime’ coatings quietly require one.

The process
How we coat your car
1
Decontamination wash
A thorough hand wash and chemical decontamination strips bonded iron, rail dust, and road tar that a normal wash leaves behind.
45 min
2
Clay treatment
A clay pass pulls off any remaining bonded contamination, leaving the paint glass-smooth so nothing gets trapped under the coating.
30 min
3
Paint correction
Machine polishing removes swirls, light scratches, and oxidation. On the Enhanced tier this is a two-stage compound-and-polish that restores a showroom finish.
2–4 hrs
4
Solvent cleanse
An IPA wipe clears every trace of polishing oil so the coating bonds to perfectly bare clear coat — not to residue.
15 min
5
Owner’s Pride application
The coating is laid down panel by panel with a suede applicator and leveled by hand — even coverage, no high spots, then registered under the Owner’s Pride warranty.

Curing
The coating cross-links over 24 hours. The vehicle stays dry and out of direct sun while it hardens. You get specific aftercare in writing.

Because it’s genuinely among the hardest factory paint made — 3H to 5H — and many Mercedes finishes add an engineered nano-silica skin at the top. It resists swirls, but it also resists the compounds used to remove them, which is why a Mercedes correction is a multi-stage job best left to someone who knows the paint.
It’s almost the definition of worth it. Obsidian shows every mark, so a careful correction plus coating produces a dramatic before-and-after — and then the coating keeps it that way instead of letting wash swirls creep back in within a month.
No — a coating protects it. The risk is over-aggressive correction grinding that thin layer away. We correct conservatively and add an Owner’s Pride coating as the new sacrificial surface, so the factory layer is preserved underneath.
Deep gloss and tight water beading after coating.
