Taunton is the central highway hub of southeastern Massachusetts: Route 24, the Route 140 expressway to New Bedford, and I-495 along the north end. MassDOT brines and salts all of them, and a commute on them puts a film of it on lower panels, wheels and the back of the car all winter.
Industrial park traffic
The Myles Standish Industrial Park in the north end covers more than 800 acres. Truck traffic and freight lines through the city mean road grime and iron particles that settle on paint and feel rough under your hand.
Massasoit State Park and the ponds
On the east side of the city, Massasoit State Park is more than 1,200 wooded acres around six ponds and cranberry bogs. Cars parked near woods and water get pollen, sap and damp mornings.
