Medway grew up along the Charles River, where the water power of the river and Chicken Brook once ran cotton and paper mills. Today it is a quieter town strung along Route 109 and Route 126, and it is one of the farthest places on my roster from Wareham.

What the local conditions do to a car

Along the Charles
Village Street follows the Charles River across town, and the river and its brooks shape the low ground. Cars kept near the water stay damp longer after rain and in the morning, and wet grime does more to paint than dry.
Route 109 and Route 126 in winter
The two state routes carry most of Medway’s traffic, and MassDOT pre-treats state roads with brine before storms. The film it leaves dries white on lower panels and wheels and stays there until it is washed.
Woods and swamp
The Great Black Swamp on the Millis side once kept Medway and East Medway apart. Wooded lots like these bring oak pollen in spring, pine pollen into June, and leaf fall that stains paint if it sits wet.
Commuting both ways
Medway sits roughly between Boston, Worcester and Providence, and I-495 clips the southwest corner of town. A car that commutes in any direction collects highway grime and fallout every week.
