Falmouth has Buzzards Bay along its west side and Vineyard Sound along its south, and that southern shore is cut by a run of harbours, ponds and inlets reaching inland: Falmouth Inner Harbor, Little Pond, Great Pond, Green Pond and more. Woods Hole, at the tip, is where the ferries leave for Martha’s Vineyard. Most of the town sits on glacial sand under the pines and oaks typical of the Cape.

Route 28
Route 28 is Falmouth’s main road, divided highway down from Bourne and then Main Street through downtown. It is regularly congested, which means stop-and-go, brake dust and, in winter, brine thrown up by slow traffic.
Cape sand
Falmouth is built on glacial outwash sand. It blows onto cars, comes home from the beaches on every shoe and works into carpet and seat rails.
Pine and oak cover
The Cape’s pines and oaks shade a lot of Falmouth driveways. Pine pollen peaks from late May into June, and sap and droppings come with parking under trees.
