Hockomock Swamp damp
A large part of the southwest corner of town is the Hockomock Swamp and its wildlife management area, the largest freshwater swamp in Massachusetts. The Town River and Salisbury River run through town as well. Low, wet ground means heavy dew and fog, and moisture is what makes pollen and dirt bond to paint.
Route 24 in winter
Route 24 passes through the western half of town with an exit at Route 106. MassDOT pre-treats it with brine and salts it through every storm, and that film dries onto lower panels and wheels.
Pollen season
Late May into June, pine pollen coats every parked car in New England. On a damp morning it turns to a paste that bakes on in the afternoon sun.
State forest and conservation land
A state forest around a large pond and several protected areas mean plenty of tree cover, and with it sap, bird droppings and leaf fall on parked cars.
