Valley Falls, Lonsdale and Ashton grew up as mill villages on the river; farther north, around Cumberland Hill and Diamond Hill, the town is semi-rural. Diamond Hill, a massive outcrop of white quartz that once had a ski area, is now a town park. I-295 and Routes 114, 120 and 122 carry most of the traffic.

Inland winters
Rhode Island’s snowfall climbs as you move away from the bay, from about 20 inches a year on the southeast shore to 25 to 30 around greater Providence. Cumberland is on the inland side of that line, and RIDOT brines state roads ahead of every storm.
I-295 and the state routes
I-295 has two interchanges in town, and Routes 114, 120 and 122 carry the local traffic. Daily miles add brake dust to wheels and road film to the lower body.
Semi-rural north
North of the mill villages, toward Diamond Hill, the town turns semi-rural. Back-road dust and mud end up on lower panels and scratch the paint when they are wiped off dry.
Pollen and leaves
Pine pollen from late May to mid-June and wet leaves in the fall both stain paint on cars parked outside.
