What a ceramic coating won't protect your car from
Ceramic coating helps with fine marring, chemical exposure and easier cleaning. It does not stop rock chips, deep scratches or mineral deposits from drying on the paint.
No, ceramic coating does not prevent rock chips or deep scratches, though it can help resist fine surface marring and swirls.
Rock chips need impact protection
A ceramic coating will not stop a stone from chipping your paint. The cured layer is only a few microns thick and cannot absorb the strike; the paint and coating can chip together.
Paint protection film does a different job. Its thicker polyurethane layer can flex and absorb impact energy. That makes film the product designed for rock-chip protection, though it is not indestructible.
Scratch resistance is not scratch-proof paint
A coating can help resist fine marring and light swirls. It cannot stop a key, a bracelet, a bumped shopping cart or grit dragged under a wash mitt from making a scratch that cuts into the clear coat.
A “9H” claim does not change that limit. It refers to pencil hardness—a test of resistance to scratching by graphite lead—not the ability to absorb an impact.
Water spots can still form
Water can still dry on coated paint and leave minerals behind. Water repellency does not mean the panel cannot develop water spots.
If mineral deposits sit long enough, chemical removal may no longer work. Removing them can require abrasion, which removes coating along with the deposits.
Existing swirls stay visible
Ceramic coating does not fill, hide or repair existing swirl marks. It preserves what is underneath it, and the added gloss and clarity can make swirls and haze more noticeable.
That is why paint correction comes before coating. Manufacturer guidance calls for polishing out imperfections and removing residue before application. Correcting defects afterwards means abrading through the coating first.
You still need to wash it
Coated cars still get dirty. Easier cleaning is a benefit, but it is not permission to leave longer gaps between washes: contaminants left on the surface can embed in the coating and reduce its performance.
Choose it for what it does
A ceramic coating addresses chemical and environmental exposure, including acidic contamination and UV exposure. It also helps grime release and adds gloss. Those benefits are separate from protection against impacts and deep scratches.
If easier cleaning, gloss and resistance to chemical exposure are what you want, ask me about Ceramic coating (any tier).
