Bird droppings and paint: it’s enzymes, not acid
Bird droppings can etch paint within hours on a hot day. The clear-coat research points to digestive enzymes—not acidity—as the main cause.
Bird droppings can etch paint within a few hours in hot conditions, so remove them promptly rather than relying on a fixed safe window.
How fast can bird droppings damage paint?
Bird droppings can leave etching within a few hours on a hot summer day. There is no universal countdown: panel temperature, the dropping’s composition, the paint system and exposure time all affect the result. I would treat prompt removal as the priority, not a two-hour or 24-hour deadline.
In laboratory work on pre-aged clear-coat samples, visible etch features appeared within about 24 hours. Sunlight during exposure made the damage markedly worse. A dropping removed promptly usually leaves no mark; one left on a hot panel through a sunny weekend can leave permanent damage.
Is bird poop acidic?
The researchers measured fresh droppings at about pH 6.25—slightly acidic, but close to neutral. In their tests on acrylic-melamine clear coats, acid catalysis and metal-ion catalysis contributed very little to the damage. The familiar explanation that uric acid simply burns through paint misses the main mechanism found in that research.
Digestive enzymes, principally amylase and lipase, helped break the chemical links holding the clear coat together. Some resulting polymer fragments became water-soluble and washed away. The mark was an actual pit where coating had been lost, not just residue sitting on top.
Why a hot panel changes the risk
In the laboratory, damage increased as temperatures rose toward about 60 °C. Above that, damage declined as the enzymes began to lose their activity. That does not make summer heat protective: a dark panel in direct sun can sit within the damaging temperature range.
These findings come from a relatively narrow body of research, not a test of every paint system and every dropping. They explain why heat and sunlight matter, but they do not establish a guaranteed safe exposure time.
How do I remove a bird dropping safely?
Remove it promptly rather than waiting for the next wash. Shortening contact time matters, especially on a warm panel. The evidence cited here does not establish a specific safe cleaning procedure, so it cannot support step-by-step instructions or a particular cleaner.
Can bird etching be fixed?
Once genuine etching has formed, cleaning cannot replace the missing clear coat. Abrasion or refinishing is needed to address that material loss; removing the dropping and correcting the pit are different tasks.
If a mark remains after the dropping is gone, ask me about Single Stage Polish.
